What is Epigenetics?
Epigenetics orthodontics uses a person’s natural genes to modify, change or attenuate the physical location of natural teeth, jaws and airway.
It is believed that there are specific oral devices that are capable of modulating genetic pathways, which are effectively dormant or inactive, and are capable of restarting craniofacial development in adult patients as well as in children. In addition, abnormal patterning is corrected, in part, through the deployment DNA/RDNA appliances. Your sleep specialist can determine if this device is appropriate for you.
How Does Epigenetics Work?
Epigenetic uses a person’s natural genes to correct and straighten the teeth without the use of force brackets. Epigenetic orthodontics is a recent development. It has been shown to work with in correspondence with Dental Sleep Medicine, Neuromuscular Dentistry and the treatment of TMJ disorders (TMD), OSA, snoring and the treatment of headaches and migraines.
Underdeveloped upper and lower jaws will cause the airway to be narrow or constricted resulting in impaired breathing during sleep. It is believed that these DNA/RDNA appliances, can promote the natural developmental processes that improve a patient’s airway and prevent airway issues such as snoring and other forms of sleep-disordered breathing through non-surgical airway reconstruction.
“Approximately 98% of patients with OSA, the condition is due to abnormal anatomical features of the soft tissues and/or the structures of the maxillomandibular skeleton that cause a closing of the airway.”
Sleep Apnea may be the result of an obstruction in the airway caused by narrow dental arches and/or an underdeveloped jaw. Underdeveloped upper and lower jaws can cause the airway to be narrow or constricted resulting in impaired breathing during sleep. Epigenetic appliances work to correct the underlying problem by enabling the jaws to expand to their proper position.
Your dental specialist, after consulting with you will advise which appliance would be best to fit you regarding your condition and circumstances.
