Epigenetics Q & A

How does epigenetics work?

Epigenetics work using Daytime Nighttime Appliances™ (DNA) to expand the jaws and dental arches. There are a number of different DNA expansion devices that resemble a traditional retainer or sports mouthguard.

The devices are customized to each patient and are worn during the day and night. DNA devices address the underlying cause of conditions like sleep apnea, not just its symptoms. Treatment using epigenetics is pain-free and effective at naturally improving facial development and airways.

What is epigenetics?

Genetics plays a role in determining craniofacial factors like the alignment of the teeth, jaws, and dental arches. Issues like underdeveloped upper and lower arches can lead to narrow and constricted airways.

Epigenetics is an innovative method of unlocking the genetic potential of craniofacial development. Sleep-disordered breathing conditions like sleep apnea are often caused by narrow dental arches and an underdeveloped jaw.

Epigenetics appliances are used to naturally expand the position of the jaws and dental arches, improving the airways. Epigenetics is a method of nonsurgical airway construction.

What conditions can be addressed with epigenetics?

Epigenetic appliances are effective at improving and preventing a number of issues including:

  • Snoring
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Hypopnea
  • Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Headaches
  • Migraine

If you experience excessive daytime sleepiness, facial pain, or disruptions to your sleep patterns, an issue with your airway may be to blame. Epigenetics is also useful for addressing issues like chronic migraine and temporomandibular joint disorders.

The specialists at Chase Dental SleepCare provide dental airway assessments including sleep tests to determine the underlying cause of your condition. Chase Dental SleepCare takes an integrative approach, combining holistic, conventional and alternative treatment methods. They are also a certified Vivos Breathing Wellness Center®, and use the latest technology to help identify any potential airway issues.

Once you've been diagnosed, epigenetics may be included amongst other treatments like continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) as a part of your comprehensive treatment plan. Epigenetics is often combined with other orthodontic treatments to achieve optimal results.

Epigenetics allows your dentist to address obstruction to your airway and TMJ disorders without the need for invasive surgery, drugs, or injections.
